The ruin Leuchtenburg above lake Caldaro
The ruin Leuchtenburg is not part of the local authority area of Caldaro but it’s a very important and impressive part of the scenery of Caldaro. The castle was built in the 13th century and is now a popular destination of excursions and landmark of lake Caldaro.
From Caldaro to the Mendola pass… take the Mendola funicularThe Mendola, a mountain above Caldaro, is part of the history of Caldaro: the European high nobility used to spend its holidays on mountain Mendola due to its healthy and good quality air. In 1903 the Mendola funicular was build to get easily and quickly up the mountain. This funicular is a particular piece of history because it was masterpiece of engineering being one of the steepest funiculars in Europe. Nowadays it’s still a spectacular experience going up the Mendola by the funicular which has an inclination of 64% and covers during ist 12 minutes ride 2.4km and an altitude of 850m. Take a ride up to the Mendel mountain with the historical Mendola funicular and enjoy a spectacular view from high above the mountain. Try it and be amazed!
The South Tyrolean winemuseum in Caldaro
Of course, South Tyrols winemuseum is located in the best known place for wine: Caldaro. Many exhibits show the history and tradition of making wine in South Tyrol such as impressive wine presses, vessels, barrels and other equipment. Interesting stories and facts about wine and about the duties of the “Saltner” and of the “Traubenwächter” are explained clearly in the museum.The Lake Caldaro biotope – Natura 2000 protected area
Bird-watching and hiking through the biotope at the southern end of the lake is very special. It offers food, shelter and refuge to numerous species of fish, amphibians, water insects and birds. The reeds of lake Caldaro are part of the protected area “Natura 2000”. Scientists found more than 100 different species of birds and its one of the biggest reeds between Resia pass and Verona, and lies on an important birdroute.
Architecture in Caldaro
Caldaros scenery is influenced by historic houses and manors, however there are also some new buildings. In any case it’s a big concern to try the best to create a good symbiosis between old and new… creating a very special locations and buildings which become very soon an eye catcher! The „Überetscher“ architectural style dominates the heart of Caldaro offering beautiful loggias, antique styled windows and unique gazebos. Old architecture is preserved as far as possible but it’s also a big issue to build new and particular buildings.
